Medicines Gallery, Science Museum

Sympathetic Soft Strip

Client: Paragon Interiors
Project: Medicines Gallery, Science Museum

Brief Description:

Working alongside the Principle Contractor, Paragon, KpH undertook this Sympathetic Strip Out and Enabling Project within the stunning backdrop of The Science Museum.  The works were carried out within the Medicine Gallery on Level 1 and included opening up works to facilitate the installation of the new Pendulum Lift.

KpH took all the relevant steps to assist with the live status of the building.  This included the removal of M&E Services from isolated areas, with only the active part of the museum remaining live. A large area of the suspended ceiling was removed, along with the removal of the balustrade and glass cabinets around the atrium, which was located above one an area which remained open to the public. These works took place early in the morning prior to the museum opening for minimal disruption.

The site team’s biggest challenge was to remove and preserve part of the flooring located above the live museum. Due to the nature of the works and unforeseen as to the make up of the floor, a net was installed around the ground level slab to protect the public and exhibits below from any falling dust or debris.

During the works Asbestos was discovered within rooms which spanned the Basement to Level 3 and included the Roof. The removal of which was successfully coordinated by KpH Management Team.

It was very much a requirement of the project to work closely with other trades with a large emphasis on communication of coordination of our works. As a representation of this KpH were engaged to install protection around the exhibits each night once the museum had closed in order that other contractors could work safely around them, this would then be removed first thing before the museum opened. This continued for a period of 6 weeks.

Whilst the project presented many challenges throughout our time on site, KpH can confidently say that each challenge was approached with a “can do” attitude. Working in partnership with our client to deliver this prestigious project to the overall end user.
